As the daughter of a teacher and small business owner, I grew up being shown (and told) all the reasons why I shouldn’t do either, but apparently I don’t like to be told what to do. 😉
I swore up and down that I wouldn’t let running a business for myself mean that I'd be constantly on call, with work interrupting family vacations and weekends like my entrepreneur dad, and that going into education wouldn’t mean the same struggles with the bureaucracy of the district, the parents, (even whims of politicians?!) like my teacher mom.
I decided that somehow I was going to figure out how to have a business that played nice with my life, instead of one that took it over!
I’ll never forget the late nights of my graphic design client work, almost in tears because all I wanted was to go to bed but I just had to finish this deliverable. I was working full time at Stanford as a learning designer and desperately taking on every design client that came my way because I was the sole breadwinner of my household at the time.
I was overwhelmed constantly, barely making deadlines, getting so little sleep, and still barely being able to pay all our bills. I was literally running out of hours in the day, and I was running out of steam. I needed to find some way to work less, and make the same amount of money (or honestly, more!)
